Tastes Like: Cherry, Brownie, Orange Zest

Curator’s Notes: It’s not too late to celebrate Cinco de Mayo! We’re celebrating with every sip of this amazing organic Mexican microlot from Noble Coffee Roasters. A big, buttery chocolate body reminds me of homemade brownie batter, the kind you want to eat by the spoonful. Juicy acidity throughout, like cherries or red plums, but at first sip I tasted an apricot note because the fruit flavors were so soft. As the cup cools, you’ll taste more of cherry-candy note and in the finish, a soft chai latte flavor with a subtle hint of citrus. The flavors in this cup are a great array of what you can find in specialty Mexican coffees, which always taste like candy bars to me! Tenejapa is a small growing region in the highlands of Chiapas (Southern Mexico, bordering Guatemala) that recently gained some name cred by placing #4 in last year’s Cup of Excellence. This coffee is in good hands with Noble Coffee Roasters, who have won the Good Food Awards a whopping eight times (hey overachievers, save some awards for the rest of us!). They’ve been serving this coffee as a single origin espresso in their Ashland, Oregon cafe, and I bet this is absolutely delicious as a macchiato, with a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg on top, or even as a great option for cold brew.

Bottom Line: You’ll love this coffee if you love homemade brownies, chai lattes, or chocolate-covered cherries.

Mexican ‘Tenejapa’ is produced by multiple small farms located in the state of Chiapas, in southern Mexico. The municipality of Tenejapa has only 40,000 residents and the central city of Tenejapa, only 2,000. The society consists of the indigenous Mayan culture and the common primary language is Tzotzil, an indigenous Mayan language. This culture is so embedded that most people in the area speak Spanish as a second language and even primary schools are conducted in Tzotzil. In terms of cup quality, at the 2023 Cup of Excellence in Mexico, a coffee from Tenejapa recently placed as #4 out of hundreds of coffees from around Mexico. In fact, we won this #4 COE coffee at auction and it was stunning - hopefully you were able to try it. Obviously, the amazing people in this remote region are producing some amazing coffee that we are very excited to share with all of you.
