Why I’m Obsessed: From the very first sip, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this Wush Wush La Roca from Devoción. It’s one of those coffees that’s almost impossible to describe, because there are so few comparisons to make. The closest? Geisha, the celebrity varietal of specialty coffee. Like Geisha, Wush Wush is another super-rare, super-prized, newly discovered varietal from the countless, endlessly mutating indigenous coffee types that grow wild in Ethiopia. You might say it’s Geisha 2.0. But unlike most Geishas, Wush Wush’s unique flavor profile makes it especially attractive for innovative processing — like this double-fermented lot. If you’ve ever had Kenyan coffee, known for its big body and bold fruit, you’re already familiar with double fermentation. It’s a two-step, highly controlled process that produces a coffee that is plush, sweet, and incredibly clean. And this La Roca lot is meticulous.

You’ll smell the big fruit right away in the grind: grapes, berries, hints of tropical fruit. In the cup, you get a candy-like sweetness that’s soft and rounded, never tart. There’s the sophisticated, dessert-wine richness of framboise or cordial, a cozy undercurrent of marshmallowy florals, and a sweet, freshly-squeezed citrus finish, think Meyer lemon, that lingers on your tongue. As the cup cools, the flavors evolve, and you’ll want to go back again and again. This is a “savor slowly” type of coffee. A true delight.

When you taste a coffee like this, you know there’s a story behind it. Grower Jorge Rojas has been working on his family’s farm since he was 12, and most recently won a Cup of Excellence award in 2023 for his honey-processed Geisha. This guy knows high-end coffee. And then there’s Devoción, who do their own thing in the best possible way. They buy these special lots directly from growers and fly the coffee to the U.S. immediately after processing. That means you can’t find this stuff any fresher. The flavors are bright, buoyant, and at their absolute peak — like picking a tomato right off the vine. So if you’re going to dive into an elegant coffee like this one, it’s hard to find a better showcase than Devoción. If you love Geishas or other top-shelf coffees that are expressive, elegant, and utterly unique, you simply can’t pass this up. But don’t wait. Wush Wush is a low-yield varietal, and these lots are always small... I'm talking, less-than-100 bags small. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.
